The tire and auto answers you have been searching for…
- If properly cared for, tires can last a long time - usually from 40,000 to 80,000 miles, depending on the application.
- That means they have a tread designed to give you better traction in the wet and in the snow.
- Are they properly inflated? The answer may well be "no," because as the temperature outside drops, the air inside a tire contracts and the pressure drops - one or two pounds for every ten- degree drop.
- Avoid sudden movements of the car. Accelerate gently. Turn gradually. Easy on the brakes when stopping. Those are ways to let the tread on your tires maintain good traction. Spinning or sliding tire means your vehicle is out of control
- Make sure there is adequate tire pressure in all wheels of the automobile
- Make sure you check your tire pressure regularly – at least once per month and before every long trip -- including the spare and keep it at the level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Check the tread grooves of your tires to make sure that they're free of foreign objects. This makes it easier for your tires to grip the road and increases your ability to safely maneuver your car. Also check the sidewalls to make sure there are no gouges, cuts, bulges or other irregularities.
- A bad jolt from hitting a curb or pothole can throw your front end out of alignment and damage your tires. Have a tire dealer check the alignment periodically to ensure that your car is properly aligned.
- Regularly rotating your vehicle's tires will help you achieve more uniform wear. Unless your vehicle's owners manual has a specific recommendation, the guideline for tire rotation is approximately every 6,000 miles
- Advanced and unusual wear can reduce the ability of tread to grip the road in adverse conditions. Visually check your tires for uneven wear, looking for high and low areas or unusually smooth areas. Also check for signs of damage.
- We recommend that you replace your windshield wiper blades every six months, especially in climates where there are temperature extremes. In between wiper blade changes, it is also good maintenance to clean the rubber part of the windshield wipers at least once a month to keep the blades in good condition.
- Most technicians recommend that you get an oil change every 3000 miles for maximum engine protection.
- If there were no oil in your engine, the moving parts would create so much heat that they would eventually melt together causing the engine to lock up. Once those engine parts melt together, there is no getting them apart.
